EGW and God's Law

If you are a Seventh-day Adventist, then you believe that Ellen White (EGW) was a prophet of God, then as a prophet of God, her prophetic instructions must be understood as coming from God Himself.  Does Ellen White instruct us to keep all of the commandments of God?  Just the Ten Commandments?  The Statutes?  The Judgments?  The Ordinances? The Feast Days?  The Dietary laws?   Or, are they to be discarded?  Is the Torah something that is timeless or was it just for the Jews?

These commandments, statutes, judgments, Feast Days and ordinances were not negated by God, Jesus, or Ellen White… If one did negates these laws, whoever did that is breaking the Law of God themselves.  Deuteronomy 12:32,  “Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it.”

SET ASIDE YOUR OPINION AND PRECONCEIVED IDEAS WHEN YOU READ THE SCRIPTURES.

“It does not become us to drink from the fountain of the valley, when there is a fountain in the mountain. Let us leave the lower streams; let us come to the higher springs. If there is a point of truth that you do not understand, upon which you do not agree, investigate, compare scripture with scripture, sink the shaft of truth down deep into the mine of God’s word. You must lay yourselves and your opinions on the altar of God, put away your preconceived ideas, and let the Spirit of Heaven guide you into all truth.” {RH February 18, 1890, par. 17}

DID EGW SAY THAT WE ARE TO KEEP  THE  COMMANDMENTS, STATUTES AND OREDINANCES OF THE JEWISH ECONOMY?

Fundamental Believes of the SDA church in 1889, under the leadership of EGW and the pioneers - these are the truths that God had given to them, by His prophet.  Here is Fundamental Number 11;

XI – "That God's moral requirements are the same upon all men in all dispensations; that these are summarily contained in the commandments spoken by Jehovah from Sinai, engraven on the tables of stone, and deposited in the ark, which was in consequence called the "ark of the covenant," or testament (Num. 10:33; Heb. 9:4, etc.); that this law is immutable and perpetual, being a transcript of the tables deposited in the ark ... "

Fundamental belief number 11, in 1889 said we are to keep all of God's moral requirements, summed up (summarily contained) in the Ten Commandments. That's certainly not saying that we are to keep the Ten Commandments only, as today's church teaches.  The Ten commandments are a 'summary' of God's commands.

Today's Fundamentals speak only of the Ten Commandments, number 19 says... "The great principles of God’s law are embodied in the Ten Commandments and exemplified in the life of Christ. They express God’s love, will, and purposes concerning human conduct and relationships and are binding upon all people in every age. These precepts are the basis of God’s covenant with His people and the standard in God’s judgment. Through the agency of the Holy Spirit they point out sin and awaken a sense of need for a Saviour. Salvation is all of grace and not of works, and its fruit is obedience to the Commandments."

Here in today's fundamental beliefs, Number 19, it is says the law in 'embodied in the Ten Commandments', in other words we only need to keep the Ten Commandments because they 'embodied' all the 'great principles of God's law'.   That means we can reject the rest of God's law.

 This fundamental also says obedience is the fruit of Salvation.  In other words you can be saved without obedience, while you are a lawless rebel against God's authority. And while salvation is by 'grace' God will not give saving grace to those who reject His authority, despise His word, ignore His commands, and 'hate' HIm according to Exodus 20:5.  God will give His saving grace to those whom He loves.  And God loves those who love Him and keeps His commandments (Exodus 20:6).

Malachi 4:4 - “In these Last Days there is a call from heaven inviting you to keep the statutes and ordinances of the Lords.”  (Ellen White, Signs of the Times, vol. 2, page 184, 3rd col. (1888).)  This idea is reflected in the 1889 Fundamentals, but not in today's.

“Nor does Paul proclaim to the Jews a Messiah whose work is to destroy the old dispensation, but a Messiah who came to develop the whole Jewish economy in accordance with the truth.” Ellen White, Evangelism, page 554.  This idea is reflected in the 1889 Fundamentals, but not in today's.

“The most convincing proof was given [by Paul] that the gospel was but the development of the Hebrew faith. Christ was come for the special benefit of the nation that was looking for His coming as the consummation and glory of the Jewish system.” Ellen White, Sketches from the Life of Paul, page 104.

“Christians who extol Christ, but array themselves against the law governing the Jewish church, array Christ against Christ.” Ellen G. White, Second Advent Review and Sabbath Herald”, May 6, 1875, The Law of God.

EGW is saying that if you are truly a 'Christian', follower of Christ, you will obey him.  And he told us to keep the Old Testament 'Law and Prophets' until heaven and earth pass away, forever (Matthew 5:17-20).

“In the time of the end every DIVINE INSTITUTION is to be restored.” Ellen G. White, Prophets and Kings, page 678.  This idea is reflected in the 1889 Fundamentals, but not in today's.

“Would it not be well for us to observe holidays unto God, when we could revive in our minds the memory of His dealing with us? Would it not be well to consider His past blessings, to remember the impressive warnings that have come home to our souls, so that we shall not forget God?

 "The world has many holidays, and men become engrossed with games, with horse races, with gambling, smoking, and drunkenness. They show plainly under what banner they are standing. They make it evident that they do not stand under the banner of the Prince of life, but the prince of darkness rules and controls them.

 "Shall not the people of God more frequently have holy convocations in which to thank God for His rich blessings?"  (Ellen White, Counsels To Parents, Teachers, and Students, page 343.)    NOTE; “HOLY CONVOCATIONS” in the Scriptures always refers to the Biblical Feast Days.

“The great sin of the Jews was their rejection of Christ; the great sin of the Christian world would be their rejection of the law of God, the foundation of His government in heaven and earth. The precepts of Jehovah would be despised and set at nought. Millions in bondage to sin, slaves of Satan, doomed to suffer the second death, would refuse to listen to the words of truth in their day of visitation. Terrible blindness! strange infatuation!” {GC 22.2}.

Notice that EGW refers to the Father as Jehovah, which is the same as Yahoveh (the Hebrew letter ‘yod’ could be pronounced either way).

“The precious time of probation is passing, and few realize that it is given them for the purpose of preparing for eternity. The golden hours are squandered in worldly pursuits, in pleasure, in absolute sin. God's law is slighted and forgotten, yet every statute is nonetheless binding. Every transgression will bring its punishment” (4T, pg. 147).

“After the saints are changed to immortality and caught up together with Jesus, after they receive their harps, their robes, and their crowns, and enter the city, Jesus and the saints sit in judgment. The books are opened--the book of life and the book of death. The book of life contains the good deeds of the saints; and the book of death contains the evil deeds of the wicked. These books are compared with the statute book, the Bible, and according to that men are judged.” (Early Writings, Page 52)

"The teaching which has become so widespread, that the divine statutes are no longer binding upon men, is the same as idolatry in its effect upon the morals of the people. Those who seek to lessen the claims of God's holy law are striking directly at the foundations of the government of families and nations. Religious parents, failing to walk in His statutes, do not command their household to keep the way of the Lord. The law of God is not made the rule of life....A reformation in this respect is needed -- a reformation which shall be deep and broad. Parents need to reform; ministers need to reform; they need God in their households” (Patriarchs and Prophets, pg. 143).

“The Holy One of Israel has made known to us the statutes and laws which are to govern all human intelligences. These precepts, which have been pronounced "holy, and just, and good," are to form the standard of action in the home. There can be no departure from them without sin, for they are the foundation of the Christian religion” (Child Guidance p. 506).

“The Savior said nothing to unsettle faith in the religion and institutions that had been given through Moses; for every ray of divine light that Israel's great leader communicated to his people was received from Christ. While many are saying in their hearts that He has come to do away with the law, Jesus in unmistakable language reveals His attitude toward the divine statutes. "Think not," He said, "that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets" ((Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing pp. 45-48) Reflecting Christ p. 67).

“Fathers and mothers who claim to be Christians, and who have not been doers of the words of Christ, who have not educated and trained their children in correct habits, have not brought them up to love and fear God, as God has directed them to. The words of Moses to Israel, concerning the statutes and judgments of the Lord, are also the word of God to us; he says: "Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes…” (The Signs of the Times, 03-21-95).

“The Review and Herald May 6, 1875 paragraph 12 (EGW)

Christians who profess to be Bible students can appreciate more fully than ancient Israel did the full signification of the ceremonial ordinances that they were required to observe. If they are indeed Christians, they are prepared to acknowledge the sacredness and importance of the shadowy types, as they see the accomplishment of the events which they represent. The death of Christ gives the Christian a correct knowledge of the system of ceremonies and explains prophecies which still remain obscure to the Jews. Moses of himself framed no law. Christ, the angel whom God had appointed to go before his chosen people, gave to Moses statutes and requirements necessary to a living religion and to govern the people of God. Christians commit a terrible mistake in calling this law severe and arbitrary, and then contrasting it with the gospel and mission of Christ in his ministry on earth, as though he were in opposition to the just precepts which they call the law of Moses.” {RH May 6, 1875, par. 12}

“They cast aside the restraint of the law, and give loose rein to the corrupt passions and the promptings of the natural heart, and then triumph in the mercy and grace of the gospel. Christ speaks to such: “Not every one that says unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of Heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in Heaven.” What is the will of the Father? That we keep his commandments. Christ, to enforce the will of his Father, became the author of the statutes and precepts given through Moses to the people of God. Christians who extol Christ, but array themselves against the law governing the Jewish church, array Christ against Christ.” {RH May 6, 1875, par. 16}

“Jesus, speaking from the cloudy pillar, gave special directions to the children of Israel, saying, “It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither  fat  nor  blood.” (Leviticus 3:17.) “And YHVH spoke unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Ye shall eat no manner of fat, of ox, of sheep, or of goat.” (Leviticus 7:22, 23.) “For whosoever eats the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord, even the soul that eats it shall be cut off from his people. Moreover ye shall eat no manner of blood, whether it be of fowl or of beast, in any of your dwellings. Whatsoever soul it be that eats any manner of blood, even that soul shall be cut off from his people.” (Leviticus 7:25-27.) {7MR 424.1}

“Concerning the law proclaimed from Sinai, Nehemiah says, “Thou came down also upon Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments.”  Nehemiah 9:13. And Paul ... declares, “The law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.” Romans 7:12. {FLB 83.3}

“The whole world will be judged by the moral law according to their opportunity of becoming acquainted with it, whether by reason, or tradition, or the written Word.” {FLB 83.4}

“The statutes concerning marriage, inheritance, and strict justice in deal with one another, were peculiar and contrary to the customs and manners of other nations, and were designed of God to keep his people separate from other nations. The necessity of this to preserve the people of God from becoming like the nations who had not the love and fear of God, is the same in this corrupt age, when the transgression of God’s law prevails and idolatry exists to a fearful extent. If ancient Israel needed such security, we need it more, to keep us from being utterly confounded with the transgressors of God’s law. The hearts of men are so prone to depart from God that there is a necessity for restraint and discipline.” {RH May 6, 1875, par. 6}

“The instructions given to Moses for ancient Israel, with their sharp, rigid outlines, are to be studied and obeyed by the people of God today” (Letter 259, 1903). {1BC 1103.4}

“The principles set forth in Deuteronomy for the instruction of Israel are to be followed by God’s people to the end of time.” Prophets and Kings, page 570.

“We are numbered with Israel. All the instruction given to the Israelites of old concerning the education and training of their children, all the promises of blessing through obedience, are for us.” {MH 405.1}   (See the Chapter titled, “Who is True Israel?”)

       “The Lord Jesus gave these commandments from the pillar of cloud, and Moses repeated them to the children of Israel and wrote them in a book, that they might not depart from righteousness. We are under obligation to fulfill these specifications; for in so doing we fulfill the specifications of the law of God.” {RH, December 18, 1894 par. 6, 7}

      "This day the Lord thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments; thou shall therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. Thou hast avouched the Lord this day to be thy God, and to walk in His ways, and to keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His judgments, and to hearken unto His voice." This is not the voice of man; it is the voice of Christ from the infolding pillar of cloud. Read carefully all of Deuteronomy 26, also chapters 27 and 28; for here are stated plainly the blessings of obedience. {RH, December 25, 1900 par. 6} These directions, which the Lord gave to His people, express the principles of the law of the kingdom of God, and they are made specific, so that the minds of the people may not be left in ignorance and uncertainty. These Scriptures present the never-ceasing obligation of all whom God has blessed with life and health and advantages in temporal and spiritual things. The message has not grown weak because of age. God's claims are just as binding now, just as fresh in their importance, as God's gifts are fresh and continual.” {RH, December 25, 1900 par. 7}

        “The living oracles are the flesh and blood of the Son of God, although He had not then been crucified among them. His work as the substitute for all sin was the only hope of ancient Israel, and after the plan of God had been fulfilled in the death of Christ, the New Testament was written by holy men as they were moved by the Spirit of God. This additional blessing, the New Testament Scriptures, was given, not that the Old might be cast aside, but that the light of the New Testament might be reflected back into past ages, giving significance to the whole Jewish economy. The directions so plainly laid down in reference to practical holiness should enter the life of everyone who claims to be a Christian. All should fulfill the terms and conditions given to ancient Israel in regard to practical obedience.” {21MR 44.2}

        “There must be humbling of spirit; the heart must be changed. Why, with their Bibles to read, do they not understand the "It is written"? The directions so plainly given in Deuteronomy are sacred truth. They are to be acted out in principle in all our religious service toward God and toward one another. It is always safe to be Christian gentlemen, to love as brethren, to do no injustice, and to always show liberality, tenderness, compassion, and true courtesy. {1888 876.4} The very same principles expressed in James 3 were spoken by the voice of God from the pillar of cloud. God spoke to the people the acts they should do and the actions they should not do. Deuteronomy chapter 4. The specifications are never to lose their force, for they are the expression of the mind of the infinite God. Every word is to be cherished.” {1888 877.1}

                “We are to become familiar with the Levitical law in all its bearings; for it contains rules that must be obeyed; it contains the instruction that if studied will enable us to understand better the rule of faith and practice that we are to follow in our dealings with one another. No soul has any excuse for being in darkness. Those who receive Christ by faith will receive also power to become the sons of God”. (Letter 3, 1905). {1BC 1110.4}

        “Where shall we find laws more noble, pure, and just, than are exhibited on the statute books wherein is recorded the instruction given to Moses for the children of Israel? Through all time these laws are to be perpetuated, that the character of God's people may be formed after the divine similitude. The law is a wall of protection to those who are obedient to God's precepts. From what other source can we gather such strength, or learn such noble science? What other book will teach men to love, fear, and obey God as does the Bible? What other book presents to students more ennobling science, more wonderful history? It clearly portrays righteousness, and foretells the consequence of disloyalty to the law of Jehovah. No one is left in darkness as to that which God approves or disapproves....” {FE 393.2}

“It would be a scene well-pleasing to God and angels, would His professed followers in this generation unite, as did Israel of old [referring especially to the revival in the days of Nehemiah], in a solemn covenant to "observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes" (SW June 7, 1904).

                “If we comply with the conditions God laid down for Israel, if we come before God in the beauty of holiness, and worship Him in Spirit and in truth, we shall receive the blessings that God promised to them. God sends His Word to assure us that if we will be obedient to Him, He will acknowledge us as members of His royal family. He will honor His peculiar people above all nations. "This honour have all His saints" (Psalm 149:9). {1MR 108.3}

Note; perhaps the references I gave here are perhaps an overkill, though they are not exhaustive – there is much more, but I want everybody to understand that this is a consistent theme with EGW, we are to keep the law, statutes, ordinances, and commandments of God, as given by God through Moses.  Yet today’s preachers tell us that we are not under the law, we’re saved by faith through grace so we don’t need to keep the law.

HOW DOES EGW SAY THAT WE ARE TO BE SANCTIFIED?

"The keeping of all the commandments of God is sanctification."  {EGW, Faith and Works, page 121}

WHAT WARNING DOES EGW GIVE US ABOUT CHURCH MINISTERS?

“Should all the ministers in the world tell us that we were safe in disobeying a single precept of the holy standard of righteousness, it would not lessen our obligations nor make our guilt less, if we reject a plain “thou shalt" or "Thou shalt not"."      {EGW, Faith and Works, page 122}

“The light esteem in which the law of God is held, even by religious leaders, has been productive of great evil. The teaching which has become so widespread, that the divine statutes are no longer binding upon men, is the same as idolatry in its effect upon the morals of the people.” PP143:1

“Satan was urging upon men the belief that there was no reward for the righteous or punishment for the wicked, and that it was impossible for men to obey the divine statutes.” PP88:2

“No superiority of rank, dignity, or worldly wisdom, no position in sacred office, will preserve men from sacrificing principle when left to their own deceitful hearts. Those who have been regarded as worthy and righteous prove to be ringleaders in apostasy and examples in indifference and in the abuse of God’s mercies. Their wicked course He will tolerate no longer, and in His wrath He deals with them without mercy.” {2TT 66.2}

“At that time the gold will be separated from the dross. True godliness will be clearly distinguished from the appearance and tinsel of it. Many a star that we have admired for its brilliance will then go out in darkness.” PK 188

REJECT GOD’S MERCY BY TRAMPLING ON HIS LAW.

“The Saviour's prophecy concerning the visitation of judgments upon Jerusalem is to have another fulfillment, of which that terrible desolation was but a faint shadow. In the fate of the chosen city we may behold the doom of a world that has rejected God's mercy and trampled upon His law.”  GC pg 36.   The end time generation rejects God’s mercy by not keeping God’s law.  Exodus 20:6, “but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”  Had the people kept the commandments of God, they would have had God’s mercy.

“Notwithstanding all their knowledge of the Word of God, all their light, and their position as expositors of Bible truth, many shall ‘stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.’ The ruin of this class is certain.” RH 7/18/1907

EGW AGREES THAT RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BY FAITH, BUT HOW DID SHE UNDERSTAND ‘FAITH’?

“But Abraham’s faith was made manifest by his works. “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?” James 2:21, 22. There are many who fail to understand the relation of faith and works. They say, “Only believe in Christ, and you are safe. You have nothing to do with keeping the law.” But genuine faith will be manifest in obedience. Said Christ to the unbelieving Jews, “If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.” John 8:39. And concerning the father of the faithful the Lord declares, “Abraham obeyed My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.” Genesis 26:5  PP153:4

DID EGW SAY WE ARE TO KEEP THE FEAST DAYS (AS THEY ARE PART OF THE STATUTES AND ORDINANCES.)?

“Let all who possibly can, attend these yearly gatherings. All should feel that God requires this of them. …Come, brethren and sisters, to these sacred convocation meetings, to find Jesus. He will come up to the feast. He will be present, and will do for you that which you most need to have done….These camp meetings are of importance…” Ellen White, Testimonies, vol. 2, pages 573-576. [Do not miss my ellipses. Read the whole section.]

DID EGW SAY THAT THERE IS MORE LIGHT COMING FROM THE OLD TESTAMENT?

“Investigation of Doctrine—There is no excuse for anyone in taking the position that there is no more truth to be revealed, and that all our expositions of Scripture are without an error. The fact that certain doctrines have been held as truth for many years by our people, is not a proof that our ideas are infallible. Age will not make error into truth, and truth can afford to be fair. No true doctrine will lose anything by close investigation.”{CW 35.2}

“Let no one come to the conclusion that there is no more truth to be revealed. The diligent, prayerful seeker for truth will find precious rays of light yet to shine forth from the word of God. Many gems are yet scattered that are to be gathered together to become the property of the remnant people of God.” GW 35

“New light will ever be revealed on the word of God to him who is in living connection with the Sun of Righteousness. Let no one come to the conclusion that there is no more truth to be revealed. The diligent, prayerful seeker for truth will find precious rays of light yet to shine forth from the word of God. Many gems are yet scattered that are to be gathered together to become the property of the remnant people of God. But light is not given simply to be a strength to the church, but to be shed upon those who are in darkness. The people of God are to show forth the praises of Him who hath called them out of darkness into his marvelous light. Christ has said of his people, "Ye are the light of the world," and it is the mission of light to shine out and illuminate the darkness.” {SSW, March 1, 1892 par. 4}

“Said my Guide, "There is much light yet to shine forth from the law of God and the gospel of righteousness. This message, understood in its true character, and proclaimed in the Spirit, will lighten the earth with its glory. The great decisive question is to be brought before all nations, tongues, and peoples. The closing work of the third angel's message will be attended with a power that will send the rays of the Sun of Righteousness into all the highways and byways of life, and decisions will be made for God." --Ms 15, 1888, p. 5. (To "Dear Brethren Assembled at General Conference," Nov. 1, 1888.) Released July, 1958. {2MR 58.2}

EGW SAID GOD’S ‘JUDGMENTS’ HELP US PUT THE TEN COMMANDMENTS IN PRACTICAL LIVING

“After giving the ten commandments, the Lord more explicitly enlarged upon them, laying down the principles that should be carried out in the practical life. These specifications are called judgments, or statutes, because the magistrates were to give judgment according to them. God did not speak them with an audible voice to the Israelites, but gave them to Moses, who communicated them to the people” (Sermons and Talks, Volume 2, p. 185-186).

“He then came still closer to his people, who were so readily led astray, and would not leave them with merely the ten precepts of the decalogue. He commanded Moses to write, as he should bid him, judgments and laws, giving minute directions in regard to what he required them to perform, and thereby guarded the ten precepts which he had engraved upon the tables of stone. These specific directions and requirements were given to draw erring man to the obedience of the moral law, which he is so prone to transgress.” {1SP 264.1}

EGW SAID, GOD’S ‘STATUTES’ ARE TO GUARD THE 10 COMMANDMENTS, AND WILL NEVER PASS AWAY.

“In consequence of continual transgression, the moral law was repeated in awful grandeur from Sinai. Christ gave to Moses religious precepts which were to govern the everyday life. These statutes were explicitly given to guard the ten commandments. They were not shadowy types to pass away with the death of Christ. They were to be binding upon man in every age as long as time should last. These commands were enforced by the power of the moral law, and they clearly and definitely explained that law.” {RH May 6, 1875, par. 10}

TRUTHS UNCOVERED (RESTORING LOST TRUTHS)

“The dust and rubbish of error have buried the precious jewels of truth, but the Lord’s workers can uncover these treasures, so that thousands will look upon them with delight and awe. Angels of God will be beside the humble worker, giving grace and divine enlightenment, and thousands will be led to pray with David, “Open thou mine eyes that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” Truths that have been for ages unseen and unheeded, will blaze forth from the illuminated pages of God’s holy word. The churches generally that have heard, refused, and trampled upon the truth, will do more wickedly; but “the wise,” those who are honest, will understand. The book is open, and the words of God reach the hearts of those who desire to know his will. At the loud cry of the angel from heaven who joins the third angel, thousands will awake from the stupor that has held the world for ages, and will see the beauty and value of the truth”. {RH December 15, 1885, Art. A, par. 15}

     Note; My book (Restoring Lost Truths) was written to “uncover these treasures” as EGW said would happen by ‘the Lord’s workers’.

If all the Scriptures, and all the EGW quotes, as overwhelming as they are, are not enough to convince you that Yahoveh alone is God and we are to keep His law, it has to be that church doctrines and traditions have blinded your eyes from seeing the truth, perhaps you are therefore drunk on the wine (false teachings) of Babylon.
