The Significance of God's Name

WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE?

We read in Revelation 14:1 that the redeemed have God’s name, Yahoveh, written in their foreheads.  The redeemed are also the saved ones who have the Seal of God.  So, Yahoveh’s name in the forehead is God’s seal.  So what is the significance of God’s name in the forehead?  Notice first, that the Greek doesn't say 'on' the forehead, it says 'in' the forehead.  'In the forehead' means on the brain, more specifically the frontal lobe.  The frontal lobe is the control center of our brains, it governs our behavior, our worship, our emotions, and our logic/reason.  Yahoveh on the frontal lobe means we allow Yahoveh to control us, to determine what is right and what is wrong, He is the obeject of our love, and we submit our lives to Yahoveh's will and commandments.  Who is Yahoveh?

After 50 years of Christianity I was unaware of God’s true name or what difference it made.  Unfortunately what most Christians know about God is only what they hear from their pastors during sermons, and sometimes Bible study.

What is amazing about the failure of my churches and denominations to teach me God’s sacred name, "Yahoveh", is that His name appears nearly 7,000 times in the Scriptures.  How can we ignore it? I figured that it must be important so I set out to study the issue from the Scriptures.  I was amazed as to what I found, and the utter significance of it.  Shame on the Churches, and Synagogues for not sharing with us God’s name, for God wants, and requires us to know His name.

Question; What is God’s name?

Answer; Moses was called by God to get God’s people out of Egypt.  Moses knew that he couldn’t do it on his own, so he went under God’s authority and blessing.  But knowing that everyone would say to him ‘what god sent you to us to get us free?”, he needed to know God’s name, so he asked.  God had an answer for them;

Exodus 3:13-15, Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: ‘YAHOVEH, God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’

Here Yahoveh responds to Moses' question regarding His name. He does not say His name is 'I AM', in verse 14.  By saying that He is “I AM” He is declaring His eternal existence and in verse 15 He states that His Name is "Yahoveh"! (There are those who claim the name is pronounced YAHWEH, Jehovah, or other variations of YHVH, but due to evidence found in oldest Hebrew text, I was informed that God’s sacred name is YAHOVEH – abbreviated as YHVH or YHWH)  As I understand it, the name should be pronounced YAHOVEH with the accent on the last syllable).  I will use the sacred name YAHOVEH for the remainder of this book. (The ‘V’ and the ‘W’ are the same letter in the Hebrew alphabet.)  However without knowing ancient Hebrew, it’s hard to say what the proper pronunciation was.  But I believe that God will honor you for trying the best you know how.

Yahoveh is the sacred name of the Heavenly Father. His name, which He said is "My memorial to all generations," and “forever” (Exodus 3:15). He said that He should forever be known as YAHOVEH - yet almost everyone rejects the use of that name, or they don't know it.

Again we read in Isaiah 42:8, “I am YAHOVEH, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another, Nor My praise to carved images.”  In ancient Hebrew texts, there were no vowels written, words were only spelled with consonants. The name Yahoveh was spelled in the oldest ancient texts as YHVH, or YHWH (V and W are the same letter in Hebrew.)  With the vowels that were added some time later, it is Yahoweh, or YAHOVEH,

God said that His name is YAHOVEH, now, and for all generations to come, and forever.  Note also at times in the Hebrew Scripture, Yahoveh, is shortened and He is called simply ‘Yah’.  And that makes it clear in understanding Jesus’ Hebrew name, ‘Yahshua’.  Yahshua, although sometimes spelled a little different, means ‘Yah Saves’.  Yah is working through Yahshua to save His people from their sins.

Question:  Why don’t we see the name YAHOVEH in the Bible?

The Jews used to freely speak God’s sacred name, in prayer, praise, thanksgiving, worship and even in greetings, but following the Jewish rebellion in AD 134, the Jews were forbidden by Roman law to speak the Name (YAHOVEH).  So under death threat, they quit using God’s sacred name.  Rabbis at that time included the probation of the use of the sacred name in their writings which ended up in the Jewish Talmud, where it remains to this day.  Since the Jews consider the Talmud to be a scared book, they honor it by not speaking God’s holy name.  Their thought is that when the Messiah comes, he will restore the right to speak God’s name.  On top of that, many Jews and Christians fear using God’s name for fear that they will be breaking the Third Commandment which tells us that we must not use God’s name in vain.  So, because of tradition, misguided understanding and Jewish persecution, the precious name of the Heavenly Father, YAHOVEH, has been removed from His own book.  In the original Hebrew Scriptures, His name, YAHOVEH, appeared almost 7000 times, but it was replaced with the title “the LORD”.  When you see ‘the LORD’ with ‘LORD’ in all capital letters in the Bible, it is a replacement for God’s sacred name, YHVH or YAHOVEH.

So when a inexperienced Bible reader  reads the Scriptures and comes across the term ‘the LORD’ they typically fail to distinguish from ‘Lord’, ‘the lord’, 'the LORD' or just ‘lord’.  So the reader isn’t sure if LORD is referring to Jesus, God the Father, or whoever.  This confuses the understanding of the Scriptures.  As for example, we see in the New Testament the phrase, “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be saved’.  New Testament readers typically believe it is referring to Jesus, but it’s not. That verse is a quote from Joel 2:32 and the text say ‘the LORD’ which was originally in the Hebrew text ‘YHVH’, or Yahoveh.  Joel 2:32 reads, "Whoever calls on the name of Yahoveh will be saved'. Also where in the New Testament we see 'pray to the Lord' it's not talking about praying to Jesus, it is speaking about praying to Yahoveh the Father, the LORD.

As I will show you shortly, we are commanded by Scriptures to use God’s sacred name.  In setting aside God’s sacred name, and refusing to pronounce it, those Jews, and Christians, are doing exactly as Yahshua (Jesus) said the Jews did in his day; Mark 7:8-9,”For laying aside the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men (the Talmud)….  He said to them, “All too well you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition (the Talmud and Christian Church traditions).”

Jeremiah 10:25 NKJV, “Pour out Your fury on the Gentiles, who do not know You, And on the families who do not call on Your name…”

Jeremiah 23:27 NKJV, “who try to make My people forget My name by their dreams which everyone tells his neighbor, as their fathers forgot My name for Baal.”

GOD’S SACRED NAME IS FORBIDDEN

This from a Catholic Website - On 08/26/2008 The Vatican has reiterated a directive that the name of God revealed in the tetragrammaton (YHWH or Yahoveh) is not to be pronounced in Catholic liturgy or in music. Catholics at worship should neither sing nor pronounce the name of God as "Yahweh," the Vatican has said, citing the authority of Jewish and Christian practice.

The Catholic Church forbids the use of God’s Sacred name!  One has to wonder who is behind this and why?  It seems strange to forbid the use of a name that appears almost 7000 in the Scriptures.   In ancient Israel Scriptures were to be read out loud to the people, and I'm sure they read the Scriptures without omitting God's name.

As you will see below God calls on us to know and use His name in prayer, praise, thanksgiving, worship, and song.

SO LET’S CORRECT THE MIS-TRANSLATION

This substituting of God’s sacred name with ‘the LORD’ is a point of confusion to Bible readers.  Yahshua (Jesus) is also called the Lord, kings are called lords, masters of slaves are call lords, and YHVH is called the LORD.  When we are reading, and if a person knows that "LORD" with all caps is YHVH, they may not be too confused, but when we hear Scriptures being read to us, "lord", "Lord", and "LORD" all sound alike. And many people have no idea why sometimes ‘LORD’ is all in caps.

Changing God’s word, by removing His name, from the Scriptures is forbidden by the Scriptures themselves – a number of times we are warned to not add or subtract from what is in the Scriptures.  I wonder how God feels to know that His sacred and precious name has been whitewashed from His Scriptures leaving generations ignorant of God's name… I suspect God will be angry about that.

Answer:  God clearly wants us to know His name.  He had it placed in the Holy Scriptures almost 7000 times to be remembered forever, but it was removed by misguided men.

Question; How are we to Call upon the Name of YAHOVEH?

2Samuel 22:10, “Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Yahoveh, among the Gentiles, And sing praises to Your name.”

Psalm 7:17, “I will praise Yahoveh according to His righteousness, And will sing praise to the name of Yahoveh Most High.”

Psalm 29:2, “Give unto Yahoveh the glory due to His name; Worship Yahoveh in the beauty of holiness.”

Psalms 68:4, “Sing to God, sing praise to His name; lift up for Him who rides in the deserts; by His name Yah; yea, and exult in His presence.”

Psalm 86:9, “All nations whom You have made Shall come and worship before You, O Yahoveh, And shall glorify Your name.”

Psalm 122:4, “Where the tribes go up, The tribes of Yahoveh, to the Testimony of Israel, To give thanks to the name of Yahoveh.”

Psalms 135:3, “Praise Yahoveh! For Yahoveh is good! Sing praises to His name, for it is delightful.”

Psalms 148:13, “Let them praise the name of Yahoveh; for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heavens.”

Isaiah 56:6a, “the sons of the foreigner Who join themselves to Yahoveh, to serve Him, And to love the name of Yahoveh, to be His servants…”

Joel 2:32, “And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of YAHOVEH Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As YAHOVEH has said, Among the remnant whom YAHOVEH calls.”

Zephaniah 3:9, “For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, That they all may call on the name of YAHOVEH, To serve Him with one accord.”

Acts 2:21, “And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of YAHOVEH Shall be saved.’

Acts 22:16, “And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of YAHOVEH.’

Romans 10:13*, “For “whoever calls on the name of YAHOVEH shall be saved.”

In 1 Chronicles 16:8 the people were told to call unto the name of Yehovah and give praise in His name.  “Give thanks to Yehovah, call in His name, Make known among the peoples His doings.”  And we read where they did that in 1 Chronicles 16:36, “Blessed [is] Yehovah, God of Israel, From the age and unto the age;' And all the people say, `Amen,' and have given praise to Yehovah.”  They actually used His name in their prayer and praise.

Answer, Yes, we are to use God’s name in prayer, praise and thanks giving, but we must use it reverently, but we are to call on YAHOVEH by name.  The Bible teaches that there is salvation and blessings in that name.

Question; Does calling on the name YAHOVEH save us?

End time prophecy tells us that Yahoveh's people, who will be saved, will be calling on Him by His name.

Zech 13:8-9, " And it shall come to pass in all the land," Says Yahoveh, "That thirds in it shall be cut off and die, But one- third shall be left in it: I will bring the one-third through the fire, Will refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name (YAHOVEH), and I will answer them. I will say, `This is My people' ; And each one will say, `Yahoveh is my God.' "

Here is another prophetic scripture that reveals God’s people are using His Sacred Name– this is the seal of God, which is in contrast to the Mark of the Beast:

Revelation 14:1 – “Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred [and] forty-four thousand, having His Father's name (YAHOVEH) written in their foreheads”. The God of the redeemed will have the name YAHOVEH written in their foreheads”

THOSE WHO REVERE GOD’S NAME WILL BE SAVED

Malachi 4:1 “Surely the day is coming; it will burn like a furnace. All the arrogant and every evildoer will be stubble, and the day that is coming will set them on fire,” says Yahoveh Almighty. “Not a root or a branch will be left to them. 2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves. 3 Then you will trample on the wicked; they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says Yahoveh Almighty.

Answer; When we call on God by name (Yahoveh) we are distinguishing Him from all other gods, and showing Him respect, reverence, honor and love. When we respect, honor, revere and love His Name and the authority and the goodness that goes with it - it is an act of worship. We are saved not merely by the literal Name itself as though it is magic, but by accepting and respecting all that the Name means, His majesty, power, glory, mercy, etc. To ignore that name, is to disobey the God that told us to love, honor and respect it.

In the same manner we are called to pray in Yahshua’s (Jesus) name and to be baptized in Yahshua’s name.  What does that mean?  It doesn’t mean that we simply say ‘… In Yahshua’s name….’.  To do something ‘in Yahshus’s name’ means to do it as we were commanded by him, by his authority. To pray ‘in Yahshua’s name’ is to pray as he commanded.  To be ‘baptized in Yahshua’s name’ is to be baptized as he commanded. So to ‘revere Yahoveh’s name’ means to revere His authority and keep His commandments.

Question; Some say that God’s name is too holy to use?

Men during the time of Adam called on the name of Yahoveh.  Genesis 4:26 – “And as for Seth, to him also a son was born; and he named him Enosh. Then [men] began to call on the name of Yahoveh.”

Abraham called upon the name of Yahoveh: Genesis 12:7-8 – “Then Yahoveh appeared to Abram and said, "To your descendants I will give this land." And there he built an altar to Yahoveh, who had appeared to him.  And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent [with] Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to Yahoveh and called on the name of Yahoveh.”

Genesis 13:4, “to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of YAHOVEH.”

Genesis 21:33, “Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of YAHOVEH, the Everlasting God.”

MOSES REVEALED THE NAME OF YAHOVEH TO ALL OF ISRAEL:

Exodus 3:15 – “Moreover God said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: `Yahoveh God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.'  A ‘memorial’ means that is something that we need to remember, not forget.

DAVID CALLED UPON THE NAME OF YAHOVEH:

Psalm 116:13 – “I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of Yahoveh.”

Psalm 116:17 – “I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of Yahoveh.”

ELIJAH THE PROPHET CALLED UPON THE NAME OF YAHOVEH:

1Kings 18:24 - "Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of Yahoveh; and the God who answers by fire, He is God." So all the people answered and said, "It is well spoken."

YAHSHUA THE MESSIAH CALLED UPON THE NAME OF YAHOVEH AND DECLARED THAT NAME TO OTHERS:

John 17:25-26, "O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me.  And I have declared to them Your name (Yahoveh), and will declare [it], that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."

GOD’S PEOPLE SHALL KNOW HIS NAME

Isaiah 52:6 – “Therefore My people shall know My name; Therefore they shall know in that day That I am He who speaks: `Behold, it is I.' "

Psalm 145:21, “My mouth shall speak the praise of YaHoVeH, And all flesh shall bless His holy name Forever and ever.”

Malachi 1:11, “For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says YAHOVEH of hosts.”

Boaz used the name YAHOVEH in a common greeting to the reapers and they responded using YAHOVEH’s name in a blessing. Ruth 2:4, “Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, “YAHOVEH be with you!” And the reapers answered him, “YAHOVEH bless you!”

Answer: it was common to call on the name YAHOVEH for centuries, before the Pharisees (modern Orthodox Jews) forbid the practice some years after the 2nd Temple’s destruction.  They, and their Talmud, still forbid it, even though scripture commands us to call on God by name.

Question;   Is it important to call upon the True Name of our Creator?

Psalms 91:14-16, “Because he has set his love on Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set Him on high because He has known My name. He shall call on Me and I will answer Him; I will be with Him in distress; I will rescue Him and honor Him. I will satisfy him with length of days and will make him see My salvation.”

Exodus 20:24b, “… in every place where I cause My name to be remembered I come in unto thee, and have blessed thee.”

Answer:  It may not seem important to man to use God’s personal name, but God says it is important to Him.  He will set us on high, bless us, answer our prayers and rescue us if we know and honor that name.

Question; Is Yahoveh's Name only for the Israelite and Jew?

Malachi 1:11, “For from the rising of the sun, even to its going down, My name shall be great among the Gentiles; In every place incense shall be offered to My name, And a pure offering; For My name shall be great among the nations,” Says YAHOVEH of hosts.”

Malachi 1:14, “But cursed be a deceiver and there is a male in his flock, yet he vows it, but he sacrifices a blemished one to Yahoveh. For I am a great King, says Yahoveh of hosts, and My name is feared among the nations (Gentiles).”

Psalm 148:11-13, “Kings of the earth and all peoples; Princes and all judges of the earth; 12 Both young men and maidens; Old men and children. 13 Let them praise the name of YAHOVEH, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heaven.”

Answer:  Scripture tells us that God’s name YAHOVEH is to be used by all people of all nations.

Read these verses and tell me if you think YAHOVEH wants us to use His name or keep it a secret…

Micah 5:4 - “And [Messiah] will certainly stand and do shepherding in the strength of Yahoveh, in the superiority of the name of Yahoveh his God. And they will certainly keep dwelling, for now he will be great as far as the ends of the earth

Zephaniah 3:9 - “For then I shall give to peoples the change to a pure language, in order for them all to call upon the name of Yahoveh, in order to serve him shoulder to shoulder.”

Zechariah 6:12 - “They will actually take refuge in the name of Yahoveh.”

Zephaniah 14:9 - “In that day Yahoveh will prove to be one, and his name one.”

Malachi 1:11 - “’My name will be great among the nations,’ Yahoveh of armies has said.”

Malachi 2:2 - “’If YOU will not listen, and if YOU will not lay [it] to heart to give glory to my name,’  Yahoveh of hosts has said, ‘I shall also certainly send upon YOU the curse, and I will curse YOUR blessings’.”

Question; Does it really matter how we address God?

In the Holy Scriptures, God gives us His name 6828 times, and states that it was His name ‘forever’, ‘for all generations’.  There are curses for those who hinder the use of that name and blessing for those who use and promote that name. There is no doubt that God wanted us to address Him as YAHOVEH forever and love that name.  A personal relationship starts with a personal name.

Isaiah 52:6, “Therefore My people shall know My name; Therefore they shall know in that day That I am He who speaks: ‘Behold, it is I.’”

Isaiah 56:6a, “the sons of the foreigner Who join themselves to Yahoveh, to serve Him, And to love the name of Yahoveh, to be His servants…”

Jeremiah 16:21, “Therefore behold, I will this once cause them to know, I will cause them to know My hand and My might; And they shall know that My name is YAHOVEH”.

Psalm 86:9, “All nations whom You have made Shall come and worship before You, O Yahoveh, And shall glorify Your name.”

Psalms 148:13, “Let them praise the name of Yahoveh; for His name alone is exalted; His glory is above the earth and heavens.”

Joel 2:32 - “Everyone who calls on the name of Yahoveh will be saved.”

We transgress God’s commandments when we don’t use His name, because God commanded that we use His name for prayer, praise, giving thanks and worship.   Also, when we remove God’s name from the Scriptures and add the title ‘the LORD’ in its place, we are breaking another of God’s commandments.  It says in Deuteronomy 4:2, “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of YHVH your God which I command you.” When we remove His name and add the genetic title ‘the LORD’, we are in violation of what He commanded us, and corrupting the Scriptures.

Answer:  Yes, God over and over again commands us to call on Him by His sacred name in prayer, praise, song and thanksgiving (see verses below).  In spite of that, most churches don’t even teach their people God’s true name.

PLEASE RESTORE THE MIS-TRANSLATIONS WHEN YOU READ

You now have seen how your Bible has intentionally mis-translations the sacred name of God ‘YHVH’ or ‘Yahoveh’ into “the LORD” almost 7000 times.  As you have now clearly learned in this chapter, that this mis-translation has major implications for how you read and understand the Scriptures.

When the Jews read the Hebrew text and come across the name 'YHVH' they intentionally mispronounce it as "LORD". So from now on, when you read your English text Bible, and see the phrase ‘the LORD’, correct the error and pronounce it "Yahoveh".

I believe that it was an evil act to remove God’s name from the Scriptures, and Satan was perhaps behind it, using misguided men, who, out of ignorance, thought that they were doing the right thing.  But they robbed the people of God's name and they robbed God of His glory, by confusing the issue of who God is, and that helped open the way for the confusion and errors such as the invention of the Trinity.

CONCLUSION

It’s very clear from the Scriptures that God’s name is Yahoveh or pronounced Jehoveh, Jehovah although some say Yahweh. (There was no ‘J’ in the ancient Hebrew or Greek, but the ‘Y’ Yod was not pronounced as our English ‘y’ either.  So we mustn’t be too dogmatic on the pronunciation.)  God knows when you are address Him, and He will not be offended by a mispronunciation, but will be pleased that you obeyed Him and called on Him by name.

I know that there are people who will say, we really don’t know how God's name was originally pronounced, so why bother speaking it – we may be completely wrong.  And that's true, but would you rather have someone call you by name, even if they mispronounce it, or to call you “man” or “person” or some impersonal title?  That would be an offense if you did it to a close personal friend or a parent. I would consider it much more respectful to be called by name, even if it was mispronounced. It’s also very clear that God requires us to use His name and tells us that there is a blessing and answers for prayers for those who call upon His name – even if they honestly mispronounce it.  Just do your best.

It is interesting, but sad, that one could attend a Christian church their whole life, listen to sermons, go to Bible studies, read the Bible from cover to cover and still not know God’s name.  Yet God commands us to know His name and to call on Him by name.  To not do so is to violate God’s command.  It is rejecting God’s authority to command us.  To know His name and not use it is then a serious issue.

People who weren’t taught God’s name could be considered victims and innocent due to their ignorance, but yet if they had an opportunity to learn, which most of us do, but were simply too lazy or not interested enough to seek the truth, they may be held guilty – but only God knows that.  My point is that there is responsibility on our part to seek truth.  I guess those who love God will seek truth, that’s why you are reading this.  Those who really aren’t interest in God, are showing that they don’t love or fear God.

Some years ago, when I was worshiping with a Messianic group, I became aware of God’s sacred name, but until I did this Biblical study, I didn’t see the real need to use it.  Now it is clear that we are commanded to use that Sacred Name in prayer, praise, worship, in holy discussion about God and in Bible study – and it is wrong to ignore God’s Holy name...or suppress it.

Keep Studying, Keep Seeking Truth.....Yahoveh will honor your effort.
